H J Pugh Summer Vintage Sale RESULTS

An extra addition to the usual H J Pugh auction calendar was their Summer Vintage Sale held this last weekend.

Star of the sale had to be lot 168 the vertical Blackstone oil engine bringing a very respectable £16,500. Followed by lot 160 the Tangye hot bulb compressor engine realising £5,100

There was an influx of Hamworthy engines in the sale, some of which didn’t bring anything like expected for instance lot 150, the little hopper cooled Hamworthy that sold for just £380

Lot 149 – 4hp Hamworthy hot bulb 2 stroke oil engine £1,700

Hamworthy oil engine 4hp on trolley with water tank. Engine No. 27030

 

Lot 150 – 2.5hp hopper cooled Hamworthy oil engine £380

Hamworthy oil engine 2½ hp stationary engine on trolley. Engine No. 21397

 

Lot 151 – Hamworthy compressor engine £420

Hamworthy oil engine, fitted with BTH magneto. Engine No. 35740

 

Lot 154 – 5hp Hamworthy oil engine, believed to be the oldest in preservation £800

Hamworthy oil engine 5 hp comes with starting handle on Tuglift trolley, 1916. Engine No. 11173. Believed to be the oldest surviving Hamworthy product with production starting at number 10,000 in 1914

 

Lot 159 – Petter 1.5hp Reavell compressor set £920

Petter M 1½hp stationary engine and compressor on trolley. Sn. 7149. Restored in 2007. C/w working instructions.

 

Lot 160 – Tangye hot bulb oil engine/compressor £5,100

Tangye Hot Bulb engine compressor on trolley. C/w starting handle. No. 33212. Believed manufactured in circa 1902 and was possibly rebuilt in C. 1925. Operating book, photos, letters to and from Tangye expert, history and Tangye transfers in office

 

Lot 162 – Ruston Hornsby 1ZHR £4,000

Ruston Hornsby 1ZHR 11hp stationary engine in show trailer. Sn. 401043. This engine was bought new by The Austin Motor Company in July 1957 and was delivered to Bromsgrove College of further education as a teaching aid. It has been in the same ownership for over 25 years where it has been rallied. C/w photos of its history, instruction manuals, spare parts list etc. in office

 

Lot 167 – 1 3/4hp Waterloo Boy with Webster magneto £1,000

Waterloo Boy 1¾hp open crank engine fitted with Webster tripolar LT magneto

 

Lot 168 – Vertical Blackstone oil engine £16,500

Blackstone & Co Ltd Stamford, Lincolnshire vertical lamp start oil engine. This particular unit, engine no. 112376, is one of very few known to exist and is presented in excellent overall condition. Originally supplied by W. Thomas and Son, Carmarthen, this engine features the distinctive vertical hot-bulb (lamp start) design, which allowed reliable operation on heavier oils. These engines are seldom seen, especially in such complete and well-preserved condition
