Being rather lucky I currently own 2 Petter 5hp ”Jelly mould” engines, one is the earlier single pot carb, one slightly later twin pot, this has given me a chance to compare the two.
Apart from the obviouse carb differences there is actually several things that set these apart yet you can see the development from one to the other.
Starting with the earlier carb, single pot for fuel and that’s it. The latter version has the oil well next to the fuel chamber with an adjustable thumb screw to set the oil drip rate. Also the lack of overflow return pipe on the side of the float bowl.

Another change is the earlier air intake has the oiler fixed onto this whereas the later one, although has the boss cast in place the hole etc. hasn’t been machined out, this makes me wonder if Petter were already looking at the next incarnation of the M and didn’t change much in the design.

Crankcase drain is again something missing on the earlier engine yet there on the later one before dissapearing on the Victory that came after the Jelly.

Just shows, there is nothing “standard” on these old engines!
