Welland, just WOW!!
I’ve never been to Welland but this year they had Petter as a theme in the engine section and I figured as I’m “Mr. Petterfest” I thought I’d better go, so, van loaded, caravan hooked up and two moans from Suzy and Cam we set off at 3.30am for the trip.
First impressions when we arrived was good, the site is big, very big and was thinking to myself if they fill this, then I’m in for a treat.
Fill it they did, there was stuff everywhere, tractors, some nice uncommon tractors at that, steamer, lots of steam, play pen that got lots of use over the weekend by many people, steam and heavy haulage (note for next time, don’t camp next to the playpen!)
Just some of the tractors on display, a lovely David Brown 50D that isn’t seen very often on the rally field, David Brown 30TD, unusual International Duel Drive, and a Massy Harris 701 baler
A field with earthworks, dozers, dragline, face shovel plus tractors doing their thing, road making, railway (2 actually- one standard gauge and one narrow gauge), fair, food galore, stalls with loads of well priced items for the tinkering gentleman! Truly is a great rally and has a “feel” of the early days from when I first started rallies back in the late 70s early 80s, something that is lost to the feel of shows around this part of the world nowadays.
Engines there was plenty, a fantastic show of Petters, from early oil engines to the humble (And better than a D type IMO) A1, M types galore with a good show of the biggest 8hp engine put on, not often you see an 8 around here but plenty at Welland, should be some at Petterfest too…..
Mr Lacey was there with a pair of Petter twins, nice AV on a genny to pump up the air for his lovely Petter VST24 twin cylinder 2 stroke, a really sweel sounding engine indeed.
Friday night was a light up and many engines took part, these are getting popular now and really do add something special to the evening, just brings a new meaning to rallying and long may it continue.
The fair had the Showmans engines all lined up, even had some powering the rides which was nice, as although they look fantastic at night they look and sound absolutely fantastic doing what they are supposed to do and working hard powering the rides and light, truly wonderful!
So really, if you want a fantastic, full on weekend, working weekend with lots to see then Welland is worth the trip and we will be back……
