Woolpit Steam Rally 2026

Woolpit Steam Rally at the end of May has been running for over 30 years. I saw several good reports online on Instagram and Facebook from the first day of the show so took the opportunity of visiting for the first time on the Sunday. My first impression was that the event is held on a rather compact site, but found that there were a lot of nice exhibits fitted into the space available. Lots of early and interesting tractors if that is your thing, several portable steam engines powering machinery, and then a good display of stationary engines around the edge of the field.  I’ve picked out my favourites below, with a special highlight being an immaculately restored Ransomes Wizard engine that ran better than it looked and demonstrated some impressive engineering and restoration work by the owner.

Lister D in its own display pen, it appeared to have got through a lot of fuel!

Walsh and Clark was the special feature of the event, and it was nice to see five examples of their engines displayed together as well as one of their slightly odd horizontally opposed engined tractors.

There was a nice selection of other exhibits, with something to interest most collectors. Good to see exhibitors promoting their events and publications as well. Old Oil & Gas Engines Magazine had two engines on display and display boards with other engine owners, Vintage Engine Enthusiast with their Walsh & Clark as well as Rob & Suzy “Petterfest” Cole making smog in the corner.
