A day out in the Yorkshire Pennines

Saturday April 5th saw Darren & Kelly Lees & their family open up their collection to fellow engine enthusiasts from around the country. As well as Darren & Kelly’s own vast collection of engines, they also hosted several visiting engines. Located high in the Pennines close to the town of Holmfirth, the venue offers some excellent views of the surrounding area including the iconic Emley Moor Mast which stands an impressive 329 metres tall.

The biggest 2 engines on display were these Ruston & Hornsby diesels.

In the sheds were a host of engines, with the focus mainly on the larger diesel variants. The biggest was a Ruston & Hornsby 8HR, which was originally supplied by Ruston agents in Paris. Alongside was another large Ruston. This time it was a 5H engine and to see both alongside each other is a very impressive sight. In the same building there is a Ruston & Hornsby 3XHRO college engine as well as a selection of Lister CS diesels and other engines. These include a stunning Lister Junior, four post sheep shearing set. There was also a National F type and a Ruston PT.

At the other side of the yard is a new shed which was recently finished. In here are another 4 engines, the largest of which is a Ruston & Hornsby 5XHR. This engine is currently undergoing restoration, but is look as though its not far off from running. Also in this shed were a couple of Lister CS diesels. One of these was a start-o-matic generating set, whilst the other is on a cast bad driving a Ruston BCD compressor. The final engine in this shed was a Petter air-cooled diesel powered Brush generating set.

The open day was very well attended with several family friends showing engines in the yard & in 1 of the farm buildings. These included Lee Blake, who was showing his recently acquired hit & miss governed, Amanco 4 Mule Team. Another visiting engine was a stunning Petter Atomic, displayed by Ricky & Stuart Mounsey.

Catering was laid on throughout the day, with a mix of sausage rolls, cake, scones biscuits, soup, tea & coffee supplied in large quantity. The event and the large numbers of people attending is a credit to the hosts, who were very welcoming. A huge thanks needs to go to Darren, Kelly & their family, plus all of their helpers for putting on such a great day and making us all feel so welcome.
